Tanami House
BROOME | WA
Tanami House was designed to be flexible enough to accommodate either a small family or shared housing, with an emphasis on providing comfortable and functional indoor and outdoor living spaces, and 3 modest and equally sized bedrooms.
The design incorporates two wind scoops that provide passive cooling from the westerly breeze. These are a reference to Broome's historic buildings (such as short street gallery) that relied on wind scoop cooling before the days of AC. The high ceilings over the indoor and outdoor living spaces increase the volume of the rooms and give a greater sense of space, as well as improving the thermal comfort of the spaces.
The feature timber paneling in the living spaces are washed by soft light from the wind scoops when open, creating a beautiful natural lighting to the living space. A functional plan layout makes the best use of the corridor space by providing laundry and study areas all in a compact and efficient plan. The resort-style mandi bathroom creates an indoor -outdoor space that allows you to enjoy the best of the Broome climate.
The positioning of the building on the site provides shading from the harsh western sun from the neighboring building, whilst allowing a generous front yard space including a dense buffer of natural landscaping on the corner of the block to increase privacy. The gardens are designed to be low maintenance and all native, and a space was set aside for a future vegetable garden or even a fire pit.
Built in 2014 and as an exercise in frugality, Tanami House was built for a contract sum of $335,000 inclusive of GST.
