Barellan Homestead

Barellan Homestead sits on an incredible nineteen-hectare site in the Noosa Hinterland, with uninterrupted frontage to Lake Macdonald.

Our scope of work for this project was the restoration and upgrade of the existing structures, landscape and infrastructure on site as well as new ancillary buildings. Through careful interventions that improve the function and usability of the existing structures, the property has been elevated to a new level.

The existing structures, several of early 20th century construction, were restored and kept true to their original form and celebrated as the heroes of the site, with the external appearance kept intact. The interiors are luxurious and classic rather than rustic balancing style and function. Traditional galvanised steel roofs were reinstated as a nod to the heritage of the past structures, and to differ from the “ paint everything white” approach many take when restoring these old buildings.

In contrast to the existing white weatherboard structures, a new hardwood outdoor living area was added, providing a contemporary element adjacent to the main house, and embracing the north facing aspect of the site with vistas to the lake. Oversized native hardwood posts and beams reference the stands of timber on the property and are finished in a weathered grey tone that compliments the heritage galvanised roofs. Locally sourced natural stone features in the walls, adding to the natural vernacular tones of the new structure.

A new screened entry stair was added to the existing 1970s timber barn structure along with a full internal renovation of this structure. White battening to the open-air stair provides a sense of privacy to the main house and adds sun protection whilst respecting the existing structure.
